Chocolate Protein Bars

Chocolate Protein Bars

I’m not the kind of girl who drinks protein shakes after every workout. However, sometimes I feel that I need to eat more protein when I do a lot of workouts. I’m not a vegan or vegetarian and I do eat a lot of fish, eggs and chicken but after every workout, I’m not always in the mood to eat straight away a big meal. In addition, I’m quite sceptical about store protein bars. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that there are some natural and good ones as well but many of them are just full of refined sugar and additives.

However, sometimes I feel that I need to give my muscles some recovery and because of that, it would be great to eat some protein and fibre about one hour after strength training. (No, it doesn’t mean that I’m going to be a bodybuilder). In addition, I have noticed that if I don’t eat enough protein, then I’m just even more hopeless with eating all the sweets. Of course, I eat healthy sweets which recipes you can see everywhere on this blog but it doesn’t mean that I can eat ridiculous portions. I will just have a belly ache and my skin goes bad when I do this.

Recently I have discovered organic hemp protein powder which goes perfectly together with my chocolate bars. I feel that compare to whey protein it has a little bit better taste. The hemp protein I bought was made of real hemp seeds so that the seeds were just pressed to remove the oil content and the one what was left was made into powder. So, in my opinion, there shouldn’t be anything wrong with that one and it isn’t that process. (You can find hemp protein powder in all the organic health stores or online stores).

Why hemp protein? I feel that compare to usual whey protein this one tastes better and is better for my skin. However, if you prefer full protein, then hemp protein isn’t the one. Compare to other proteins, hemp protein contains also omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and fibre. Usually, 100 g of hemp protein contains 8,2 g fat (just like omega-3 and omega-6), 8,1 g carbohydrate, 23,9 g fibre and 48,3 g protein. So, they have pressed out most of the hemp fats and made into oil and there just some left and I think, that it’s so normal that they haven’t removed the leftover fibre and fats with some technique.

So, hemp protein still has a little bit of the omega fatties and fibre inside and because of that, some researchers have even found that it digestibility is better. Some even say that they have lost weight because of hemp protein more effectively. In addition, hemp protein has additional health benefits such as anti-fatigue and immune boosting. So, what’s not to love about it after some nice workout!

Chocolate Protein Bars

About 14 chocolate bars

  • 2,5 dl raw hazelnuts (about 150 g)
  • 2,5 tbsp organic hemp protein powder (about 25 g)
  • pinch of pink Himalayan salt
  • 2,5 dl juicy dates (about 250 g, if you don’t have juicy ones, then you can use dry ones, but you need to soak them for 10 minutes in a warm water)
  • 2 tbsp raw cocoa powder (about 20 g)
  • 30 g organic cocoa butter (about 2 tbsp)
  • 1 tbsp cocoa nibs
  • Decoration: 1 tbsp melted raw chocolate, toasted hazelnuts and cocoa nibs

  1. Blend the hazelnuts in a food processor about 15 seconds (until just crushed a little bit, not into powder, you need that crunchy texture).
  2. Add salt, hemp protein and mix until combined. Add dates and blend until it sticks together.
  3. Melt the cocoa butter in cocoa powder. Add it to the blender.
  4. Blend until combined and sticks together. Have a taste and correct the sweetness when needed (maybe you need to add some cocoa powder).
  5. Add 1 tbsp cocoa nibs and mix until combined.
  6. Press the mixture at the bottom of the plastic container or box (24 x 15) which is covered with baking paper.
  7. Put it in a refrigerator and let it set for 6 hours or use a freezer for an hour.
  8. Take it out of the box and slice the “cake” into bars. Decorate!

You can always freeze the protein bars.  Just melt them a few hour in a refrigerator for half an hour at room temperature before you enjoy them.
